With slender bronze green leaves and lilac tubular flowers, this hardy annual makes an attractive addition to the herb garden. Summer Savory lends an aromatic peppery tang to soups and seafoods. Its mild flavour is useful as an alternative to sage or thyme.
Sowing Info
Sow seeds from February to May at 18-20°C (65-68°F), on the surface of a good quality seed compost, cover with a sprinkling of vermiculite or compost. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 14-21 days. Keep the compost moist, water seedlings lightly on emergence.
Growing Info
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for a few days. Transplant outdoors in full sun on any well drained soil at a distance of 38cm (15in) apart.
