How does HOTBIN MK.2 work?

The HOTBIN is like no other compost bin on the market, it will quickly chomp through all your food and garden waste turning it into rich, organic compost .The unique material properties insulate the heat generated naturally by bacteria as it breaks the waste down in the HOTBIN. Working as an aerobic composter, air is drawn in through the mesh plate at the bottom and expelled as steam through the valve in the lid. HOTBIN is a continuous composter. Add waste in the top and after 30-90 days, the hatch can easily be removed from the lower part of the bin and the compost removed. The base of the HOTBIN also includes a tap to draw off leachate (liquid fertiliser) from the unit. The HOTBIN is a sealed unit with a sealed base.

What’s Included : 200L HOTBIN, User Guide, Lid Thermometer, 2 Cam Straps, Kick Start Bottle Internal Thermometer, Raking Stick, 25L Bag of Bulking Agent (partially composted wood chip) Size: 115 x 55 x 55cm

What do I need to add?

You will need a minimum quantity of 5 Kgs of waste per week to maintain hot composting. (5 Kgs is 10 litres, one large kitchen caddy the average for a Irish household.) Add in shredded paper or card to control moisture (a good way to get rid of your recycled paper) and bulking agent (partially composted woodchip) to provide aeration.

Have it for three months now and have a better understanding of how to look after it. Took some time, patients and attention to get the mix right and for these reasons it migh not be suitable for some. I also had to spend some time draining off the liquid regularly until I got the mix right. I also spend some money on additional bark to aid the ongoing composting. However, I love the speed of the process and I'm still tweeking the mix. The external thermometer is a good guide as to how it is preforming and I would encourage others to "stay with it" as you will get it right eventually.

Bought this in December and for the 1st few months, didn't see much happening with the thermometer! We followed the instructions on mixing different materials but Jan/Feb so cold that it didn't seem to make any difference. 2 things changed this...1st grass cut and adding clippings in and we moved the bin to a sunnier spot in the garden. Within days it went up to 40 to 50 deg. Now we keep a separate 'heap' of grass cuttings and twiggy waste and mix that in with every load. We haven't yet looked at the compost coming out, plan to do that sometime in April. The bin is very clean, no smell, and I put all my 'clean' garden waste into it - that is teabags, eggshells, uncooked food scraps, no processed food waste, recyclable paper/cardboard - this is most of our kitchen waste anyway so we manage to feed hotbin 2 or 3 times a week. Really pleased with this so far :D

Composting is a routine part of good gardening and a crucial part of food waste recycling in the home. The Hotbin ticks both boxes and does both jobs well. It needs to be managed carefully to achieve best results. Inputs need to be a balanced mix of food waste, cardboard and crushed rotted wood. The bin works very well under ideal conditions. It does need to be minded carefully for best results, in terms of sorting what green waste is added and layering with cardboard. Two minor quibbles. The bin could do with a bit more cladding around the hatch for emptying compost. The bin is made of Styrofoam and easily damaged with a metal tool when digging out the compost. The Hotbin is expensive but does work well. You get what you pay for .

I bought this in July. Followed instructions and was amazed to see temp reach 60 degrees within 3 days. It was 70 degrees and higher for a few weeks. Works well once you follow instructions and keep feeding her well. Looking forward to getting our first load of compost in a few weeks. It’s expensive but we’re putting almost nothing in terms of food waste in the brown bin now, which is great.

We love this product as it is quite amazing how hot and steamy it becomes. We would have scored 5 were it not for the fact that the drain outlet for the wonderful plant feed that puts out every few days But the drain is set too low to place anything higher than a thimble underneath. Needs to be placed on feet/blocks. Otherwise product is easily the best compost maker we ever tried.
