Bob Brown: Too many plants, too little space

Has a life-long obsession with hardy perennials widened and much honed since he started his nursery Cotswold Garden Flowers 29 years ago on an isolated acre of unpropitious alkaline clay in Worcestershire. He is known for having opinions (many very critical) about all the 16-17 thousand kinds of plants he’s grown or tried to grow. He has been vice chairman of the Herbaceous Committee of the RHS overseeing trials for the Award of Garden Merit (AGM). He writes for various periodicals including a monthly series in Gardening Which. He’s holder of the RHS Veitch Memorial medal awarded for the science and advancement of horticulture.

June Blake: Making sense with plants, buildings and landscape.

The garden that she made and is still making on her family farm is now internationally acclaimed, attracting visitors from all over the world. It has featured innumerous publications, both in Ireland and abroad.Seasonal flow is the key. During the growing period the plantings must move gracefully from one month to the next. This requires continual deadheading, chopping, tweaking and uprooting. June is a master plantswoman, with a deep knowledge fostered by having propagated and grown thousands of different varieties. She is rigorous in her choice of plants, seeking those that retain an element of wildness, so that they populate the space gracefully, while keeping in harmony with the rugged and strong character of west Wicklow.

Neil Porteous A Gardeners Work:

Head gardener at Mount Stewart Co Down and Gardens and Parks Advisor for the National Trust, he is currently renovating one of the great ‘Robinsonian’ plantsman’s gardens at Annes Grove, Co. Cork for the OPW. His expeditions to see plants growing in their native habitats include trips to
Sichuan and Yunnan in central and southern China as well as NE India, South Africa, Myanmar and Tasmania, Victoria and Queensland. He trained in Scotland before joining the Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh and gained experience at Hillier’s Nursery and Bristol Zoo .He has a BSc. Hons in Landscape Management and an MA in Garden History Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh but is still very much a hands on craft gardener.
