Crown Imperial
A Bold Architectural Statement for the Spring Garden
Some flowers simply demand attention, and Fritillaria 'Purple Dynamite' is one of them. Rising proudly above the border, its tall, stately stems carry a magnificent crown of rich plum-purple, bell-shaped flowers suspended beneath a striking tuft of glossy green foliage. Few spring bulbs possess such dramatic presence or architectural elegance.
Unlike the familiar orange Crown Imperials, this exceptional variety introduces an entirely new colour palette to the garden. The deep purple blooms bring richness and sophistication to mixed borders, creating a stunning focal point that draws the eye from every angle. Whether planted individually or in small groups, it delivers a display of remarkable impact.
Its strong upright habit pairs beautifully with later-flowering tulips, ornamental alliums and herbaceous perennials, helping to bridge the gap between early spring bulbs and the first flush of summer planting. The flowers are also lightly scented, helping to deter deer and rodents in many gardens.
For gardeners looking to grow something truly distinctive, 'Purple Dynamite' offers a combination of rarity, elegance and commanding presence that few spring-flowering bulbs can equal.

? Why Mr Middleton Chose It
We introduced 'Purple Dynamite' because it reimagines the traditional Crown Imperial. Most gardeners know the classic orange forms, but this remarkable deep purple selection offers something altogether more refined and contemporary while retaining the same impressive stature and garden performance.
? Garden Designer's Tip
Plant towards the back of a sunny border where its impressive height can be fully appreciated. It looks magnificent emerging through drifts of blue Muscari before being joined by ornamental Alliums and deep-coloured tulips, creating layers of colour and height throughout spring.
⭐ Mr Middleton's Verdict
"This is the sort of bulb that makes visitors stop and ask, 'What is that?' If you're looking for a real talking point in the spring garden, it's hard to beat."
Growing Information
Plant bulbs during autumn in fertile, free-draining soil in full sun or light shade. Crown Imperials prefer a sheltered position and benefit from planting slightly deeper than most bulbs. Avoid waterlogged ground during winter. Plant bulb on their side to prevent waterlogging .
