Itoh Peonies are rare and unusual hybrids between Garden
Peonies and Tree Peonies, a cross between herbaceous and tree peonies.
In 1948 a Japanese nurseryman, Toichi Itoh, succeeded in crossing a hybrid tree peony with a herbaceous peony.
He unfortunately passed away before any had flowered. All may have been lost but for an American horticulturist who obtained permission from Itoh’s widow to patent four of the plants in the 1960’s. These plants caused a terrific stir!
There are now several varieties, all highly sought after by collectors, and generally very expensive some of the first roots sold over $1,000 .
Yet they are very easy to grow and very Hardy . They begin flowering in the first or second year in your gardenand will continue for centuries. Peonies are the longest lived perennials of all, a lifetime investment in the beauty of your garden. When established they will produce over 200 blooms per plant.
