How to Grow Camassia ? – The Effortless Naturalizer
Posted by Mr Middleton on 13th Oct 2025
Hello Gardener,
This week we’re celebrating Camassia — one of the easiest and most rewarding bulbs for Irish gardens. With their tall, starry blooms in shades of blue or creamy white, Camassias bring a touch of wild meadow charm to late spring. They thrive in damp Irish soils and look wonderful planted in drifts through lawns, wild areas, or mixed borders.
How to Grow Camassia
When to Plant:
Plant Camassia bulbs in autumn, from September to November, while the soil is still workable.
Where to Plant:
Camassias love full sun or partial shade and are ideal for moist, humus-rich ground — they’ll even tolerate heavier Irish clay better than most bulbs. Perfect for that slightly damp corner of the garden!
How to Plant:
- Plant bulbs 10–15 cm deep and 10 cm apart.
- Mix in a little garden compost or leaf mould to enrich the soil.
- Water in well after planting.
Care Tips:
- After flowering, allow the leaves to die back naturally to feed the bulbs for next year.
- In drier spells (rare but possible!), mulch in spring to help retain soil moisture.
- Once planted, Camassias prefer to be left undisturbed — they’ll gently spread and naturalise over time.
Oue Favourite Varietie
- Camassia leichtlinii ‘Caerulea’ – Classic blue spikes that light up meadows and borders.
Camassias pair beautifully with Narcissi, Alliums, and ornamental grasses, creating that natural, layered look that lasts right through late spring.
