Description

Yellow with a Red Cup

For a bulk daffodil display with considerably more colour, Narcissus ‘Red Devon’ is a superb choice. Its bright yellow petals provide the traditional daffodil backdrop while the strong contrasting red-toned cup gives the flowers their distinctive character.

Planted in large groups, the contrasting colours create a tremendous spring display and make Red Devon especially valuable for prominent areas where the planting will be viewed from a distance.

It is equally at home in a substantial garden border or allowed to naturalise through grass and informal areas.

Why We Chose It

We wanted our bulk range to offer more than different versions of yellow. Red Devon gives gardeners a distinctive two-tone daffodil while retaining the strength and impact needed for large-scale planting.

Mr Middleton Verdict

If you want a bulk daffodil that really catches the eye, Red Devon is one to plant. The red-toned cup against the yellow petals makes a striking combination, particularly when planted in quantity.

Garden Designer’s Tip

Plant Red Devon where the low spring sunshine can illuminate the flowers. For a particularly strong effect, create a large drift against evergreen shrubs or a dark hedge, where the yellow and red colouring will stand out beautifully.

Planting & Growing

· Planting period: September–December

· Flowering: Spring

· Flower colour: Golden yellow

· Position: Full sun or partial shade

· Soil: Most reasonably well-drained garden soils

· Planting depth: Approximately 10–15cm

· Spacing: Approximately 10–15cm apart

· Naturalising: Excellent

· Hardiness: Fully hardy

Plant bulbs with the pointed end upwards. Water after planting if conditions are particularly dry.

For large-scale naturalising in grass, lift sections of turf, plant beneath and replace the turf, or use a bulb planter for individual bulbs.

For stronger growth and flowering, apply Mr Middleton Seaweed Feed when planting and again as growth develops in early spring.

After flowering, allow foliage to die down naturally before removing it or mowing naturalised areas.

Ideal For

Large borders, lawns, banks, naturalised planting, orchards, woodland margins, driveways, estates and landscape projects.
