Description

Yellow with a Slightly Orange Cup

A famous and enduring garden daffodil, Narcissus ‘Fortune’ brings something extra to a large-scale spring planting. Its bright yellow petals surround a contrasting cup that develops attractive warm orange tones, giving the flowers considerably more character than a plain yellow daffodil.

Fortune is a vigorous variety and is particularly impressive when planted in substantial groups. It works beautifully in borders but really comes into its own when naturalised through grass, beneath deciduous trees, along drives or across large banks.

For anyone who wants the impact and reliability of traditional daffodils but with greater colour variation, Fortune is an excellent choice.

Why We Chose It

Fortune is a proven garden variety with a distinctive colour combination. The warmer cup creates extra interest while retaining the unmistakable appearance of a traditional spring daffodil.

Mr Middleton Verdict

A classic that has stood the test of time. Fortune gives you the impact of a yellow daffodil with that extra flash of warm colour in the cup.

Garden Designer’s Tip

Fortune is particularly effective planted alongside pure yellow narcissi. The subtle difference in cup colour becomes much more apparent when the varieties are allowed to mingle in large naturalised drifts.

Planting & Growing

· Planting period: September–December

· Flowering: Spring

· Flower colour: Golden yellow

· Position: Full sun or partial shade

· Soil: Most reasonably well-drained garden soils

· Planting depth: Approximately 10–15cm

· Spacing: Approximately 10–15cm apart

· Naturalising: Excellent

· Hardiness: Fully hardy

Plant bulbs with the pointed end upwards. Water after planting if conditions are particularly dry.

For large-scale naturalising in grass, lift sections of turf, plant beneath and replace the turf, or use a bulb planter for individual bulbs.

For stronger growth and flowering, apply Mr Middleton Seaweed Feed when planting and again as growth develops in early spring.

After flowering, allow foliage to die down naturally before removing it or mowing naturalised areas.

Ideal For

Lawns, orchards, large borders, naturalised areas, woodland margins, estates, landscape planting and substantial spring displays.
