Vine Weevil Killer

Vine weevils are a devastating plant pest. Suddenly otherwise healthy-looking plants wilt and collapse and no amount of watering will help them recover. The reason? Vine weevil grubs have eaten all the roots.

Vine weevil grubs are particularly rampant in pots or other containers but they also attack plants in borders and beds, where dealing with them is far more difficult. The real danger is the underground grub. You can’t see what they’re doing until it’s too late.

Adult vine weevils damage plants by eating irregular notches from the edges of leaves. Vine weevil larvae or grubs munch away at the root system which slows the growth of the plant, then the leaves wilt and the plant collapses through lack of nutrients. This damage is most evident from autumn to spring.

BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer is a systemic and contact insecticide for the control of Vine Weevil in pots and hanging baskets.

This product works in roots and in the soil to protect the whole plant for 2 months.  Also kills whiteflies, blackflies, scale insects and mealy bugs.

Ideal for use on flowers, roses, ornamental plants grown in pots and hanging baskets outdoors and in conservatories.

Where to use

Use indoor and outdoor. Indoor can be used all year, while outdoors between April and September.

Ideal for use on flowers, roses, ornamental plants grown in pots and hanging baskets outdoors and in conservatories.

What does a vine weevil look like? Adult vine weevils are dusty grey/black flightless beetles. They are all female and each can lay up to 1,000 eggs in a season. Eggs are laid during the summer and early autumn ready to become grubs in spring the following year.

Vine weevil chemical control cannot be used to treat edible plants.

We waited for rain: it rained steadily for two days before we applied the vine weevil nematodes and rained again for a few days afterwards. The product is very easy to use. Getting it to the roots of large shrubs is the biggest problem. I gave a 4/5 mark because I don't know yet if all the vine weevils are dead. However, from a ease of use viewpoint, it get 5 out of 5.

These evil weevils can destroy a garden, so the sight of dead weevils after using this product was a happy one indeed :)

My problem was 5 or so young potted plants with characteristic notch damage on the leaf margins. I didn't find the adult weevils, but binned the five affected pots. Package arrived the next day in post, I applied that afternoon and happily it rained over the next few days which should have facilitated the nematodes seeking out their hosts. I found the instructions easy to follow (as a first time user). Now I just hope it is effective!

  • Better than going out at night trying to catch the adults!

Have used this for a few years now and can recommend it, Unfortunately the adults come in from the neighbours so I have to use it regularly. Very easy to apply. Put trays under your pots for a few days.
