Garlic Germidour is an attractive and highly regarded purple softneck garlic, combining excellent flavour with beautiful purple-streaked bulbs. It is an excellent choice for autumn planting and produces a worthwhile crop the following summer.
The large, handsome bulbs have distinctive violet-purple markings surrounding flavoursome cloves. Germidour has a rich, aromatic garlic flavour and is particularly good for roasting, but is equally useful for everyday cooking.
Its combination of appearance, flavour and storage qualities has made Germidour a favourite with home growers.
Why We Chose It
We particularly like Germidour for its combination of attractive purple colouring, good bulb size and excellent flavour. It looks every bit as good as it tastes.
Growing Garlic Messidrome
For the best results, plant during autumn in a sunny, open position. The soil should be fertile but, importantly, free-draining, as garlic does not appreciate sitting in wet ground through winter.
Break the bulbs into individual cloves just before planting. Plant each clove approximately 5 cm deep, pointed end uppermost, spacing them approximately 15 cm apart with around 30 cm between rows.
Autumn-planted garlic benefits from exposure to winter cold, which encourages good bulb and clove formation.
Keep the crop free from weeds and water during dry periods in spring and early summer. Once the foliage begins to yellow, reduce watering and prepare to harvest.
Lift during summer and allow the bulbs to dry thoroughly before storing.
